Top Baby Questions: Updated 05/22/03
Q: Who knew?
A: Colleen’s boss, Colleen’s boss’s boss, Colleen’s co-worker Laura and Micheal’s boss.

Q: Why so many people at Colleen’s work?
A: With a high-risk pregnancy, Colleen was told to not lift heavy objects or do straining work so several people needed to know about her condition. I only told my boss since he needed to know about all the doctor’s appointments that I was going to and why.

Q: Isn’t it dangerous for a diabetic woman to get pregnant?
A: YES! But we didn’t just do this without extensive planning. We’ve been planning this with a team of doctors for about a year now. Our first priority was to get Colleen’s sugars under control and before we got pregnant, Colleen had achieved a 6.0 (a 33 day average that is similar to a non-diabetic). Colleen’s primary care physician is well-versed in diabetic pregnancies and has an amazing record of guiding diabetic women to having healthy babies.

Q: When did this all happen?
A: Before Colleen and I got married, Colleen believed that she would never be able to have children and never got a straight answer as to why. After thumbing through her doctor’s notes before giving her medical records over to her new doctor, she saw that her old doctor indicated that she had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which basically means she wouldn’t be able to have kids. After getting married, she wanted to know if she really had the disease since she didn’t really have any of the common markers. As with any woman, this bothered her and while I was just happy to have a wonderful woman as a partner, we decided to get some answers. After working with some specialists to find out if she did have the disease (to give her a final answer) we discovered that POS can be a generic term that doesn’t really mean much (unless you exhibit the common symptoms). Once Colleen’s sugars were perfect, her doctor gave us the green light to start trying to get pregnant. We started in January still thinking that the doctors we hired might be wrong and that we would never get pregnant. In February, we discovered that Colleen was indeed pregnant. What does that mean? Micheal is one potent stud!

Q: You were planning this for over a year?
A: Yep and if you look back at some of our recent choices, it all makes sense. We decided to take a few more vacations in case we did get pregnant. That’s why we went on some of our seemingly random vacations. That’s why we bought the Matrix… scary at how deceptive we are eh?

Q: When is the baby due?
A: Update: If all goes well, Colleen's doctor may induce her on her 39th week so that means that we could have a HALLOWEEN baby (gee, that brings in a whole bunch of new name ideas...)

Q: How’s Colleen, how’s the baby, how’s Micheal?
A: Colleen is sleepy and already showing a bit. She’s been wearing baggier clothes to cover up her ever expanding belly. She’s really done an amazing job of making sure she stays healthy… including taking her blood sugar 8-12 times a day (not the nicest thing to do to your fingers). In all of this, she’s really the one who deserves the most respect.

Fetus: The fetus’s heart was beating when we had an ultrasound on March 3rd. Our next ultrasound is on May 22.

Micheal: I’m still the same guy but have been taking care of Colleen as her day-to-day needs increase. Feel free to ask her if I’m doing a good job (warning: subject to mood swing).

Q: Boy or girl? Names?
A: At this point, our real focus is having a healthy baby and that means more to us than anything. Thankfully, this has been a relatively normal pregnancy for Colleen so far. And names? We discussed a few names and we’re still not firm on a boy’s or girl’s name until we find out that the baby is healthy and ready to be loved by all of you.

Q: Any chance of coming back east?
A: No idea. We will stay here in California until after the baby is born because Colleen and I have assembled a team that needs to work together to ensure the best outcome for her and the baby. Yes, we want a house. Yes, houses cost 2-3 times here what they cost anywhere else. Yes, even in this crazy economy, we're still employed. Yes, we do understand the need for family to be close to us (and a great cache of potential FREE babysitting), but we're going to make sure our little one is healthy, safe, & secure before we ponder leaving the golden state. Plus, moving cross country isn't exactly cheap.

Q: How do we meet your baby if you live in California?
A: Come to California and visit, just let us know when you’re thinking of showing up. If you’ve never been to the Golden State, I highly encourage you to do so. Apart from that, high-risk pregnancies aren’t cheap so we won’t be flying all over the place anytime soon.
